Whale Watching in Cabo: What to Know Before You Go
If you're visiting Cabo during whale season, it helps to know when to go, what you might see and what to expect on the water.
Each winter, humpback whales migrate to the warm waters around Los Cabos to breed and raise their young. The whale-watching season generally stretches from mid-December through April, though January to March usually brings the most activity.
When Is Whale Watching Season in Cabo?
For a chance to see whales, plan your Cabo trip between December and April.
January through March is the best window, with humpback sightings typically at their most consistent.
What Whales Can You See?
Humpbacks are the main attraction on most Cabo whale-watching trips. You might catch one breaching or slapping its tail against the water, or see whales travelling with their calves.
Gray whales migrate along the Baja Peninsula too, though on tours leaving Cabo, humpbacks are generally the whales you're more likely to spot.
Take a Whale-Watching Tour
Most tours depart from Cabo San Lucas Marina, spending a few hours searching for whales around Land's End and along the surrounding coastline. Expect to set aside a good part of your morning or afternoon.
A smaller boat gives the trip a more intimate feel; larger vessels may offer a more comfortable outing for families and groups.
Our tip: Morning departures offer higher chances of visibility.
Make It Part of Your Cabo Stay
There's no need to give over a whole day to whale watching. Take a morning trip and you'll still have the afternoon for the pool, the beach or some quiet time back at your condo.
Guests staying with Sun Cabo Condos can ask the concierge to help arrange whale-watching tours, along with other activities in Cabo.
